Miss Bear Paw candidates announced; pageant July 14

The Chugiak-Eagle River Chamber of Commerce on Monday released the names of 14 contestants who will compete for the title of Miss Bear Paw 2005.

The contestants, who are enrolled in grades nine through 12 and are from Chugiak-Eagle River, will compete July 14 at the Chugiak High School Steve Primis Auditorium in the Miss Bear Paw Pageant. Competitions include costume and personal interviews. The young women are judged on poise, creativity and friendliness, said Merry Braham, special events director for the chamber.

This year's pageant theme is "Hee Haw Hog Wild." Miss Bear Paw 2005 will receive a $1,000 scholarship. A $500 scholarship will be awarded to the contestant with the most outstanding community service record. The Sleeping Lady Mountain Lions Club is providing both academic scholarships. The official escort will also receive a $500 scholarship courtesy of the Festival Committee.

All contestants will help out with other Bear Paw week activities, including riding in the Bear Paw Grand Parade July 16, said Braham.

The contestants are Alisha Temple, Briannah Diaz, Christina Burger, Debbe Ebben, Heather Lipscomb, Janelle Plumb, Jessica Skripps, Kimberly Mauser, Liz Banicki, Melissa Coffer, Samantha Lange, Stephanie Campbell, Summer Snodgrass and Valerie Streano.
